Background
Hyaluronic acid (HA), the most abundant mammalian glycosaminoglycan (GAG), enriches connective tissues like skin, vitreous humor, cartilage and umbilical cord. Diarthrodial joint synovial fluid (SF) holds the highest HA concentration (0.5–4 mg/mL), serving as its major reservoir. As SF's key non-protein hydrodynamic component, HA's viscoelasticity lubricates joints and absorbs shocks. Its large hydrophilic macromolecules maintain intra-articular fluid, limit infiltration of large plasma proteins and cells, and permit solute exchange between synovial capillaries and cartilage.
