Background

Transferrins are iron binding transport proteins which can bind two Fe(3+) ions in association with the binding of an anion, usually bicarbonate. It is responsible for the transport of iron from sites of absorption and heme degradation to those of storage and utilization. Serum transferrin may also have a further role in stimulating cell proliferation.; (Microbial infection) Serves as an iron source for Neisseria species, which capture the protein and extract its iron for their own use.

Western blot analysis of Transferrin expression in human blood (A) whole cell lysates. (Predicted band size: 77 kD; Observed band size: 77 kD)

Immunohistochemical analysis of Transferrin staining in human liver formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue section. The section was pre-treated using heat mediated antigen retrieval with sodium citrate buffer (pH 6.0). The section was then incubated with the antibody at room temperature and detected using an HRP conjugated compact polymer system. DAB was used as the chromogen. The section was then counterstained with haematoxylin and mounted with DPX.
