Background
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a protein cytokine that helps the body fight infections and is produced by white blood cells and other cells. It has many functions, including: • Helping lymphocytes fight infections • Helping white blood cells pass through blood vessel walls to infection sites • Causing fever by affecting the brain's temperature control areas • Boosting the immune system in cancer therapy IL-1β is also known as leukocytic pyrogen, leukocytic endogenous mediator, mononuclear cell factor, and lymphocyte activating factor. IL-1β is produced as an inactive precursor called pro-IL-1β, which is rapidly induced when inflammatory cells are exposed to damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs).
