Background
Interleukin 4 (IL-4)
A cytokine that plays a role in many immunologic processes, including allergic inflammation and asthma:
Production: IL-4 is primarily produced by mast cells, eosinophils, basophils, and T helper 2 (Th2) cells.
Function: IL-4 induces the differentiation of naive helper T cells into Th2 cells, which then produce more IL-4. IL-4 also regulates immunoglobulin class switching in B cells.
Clinical significance: IL-4 receptors are overexpressed in many types of cancer and are being studied as potential cancer biomarkers and therapeutic targets. IL-4 is also elevated in patients with cardiovascular disease.
