Background
Umibio® Exosome‑specific Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) Medium (Phenol Red‑free) and Supplements is a serum‑free, phenol red‑free, chemically defined medium designed specifically for MSC culture and exosome production. No serum or platelet lysate is required during culture, which reduces interference from exogenous particles and enhances exosome secretion by MSCs.
Phenol red is commonly used in culture media as a pH indicator to monitor the acidity and alkalinity of the culture solution. However, it has certain drawbacks. Studies have shown that phenol red can mimic the effects of steroid hormones, especially estrogen. Therefore, phenol red‑free medium is recommended when working with estrogen‑sensitive cells such as mammary tissue. In addition, phenol red may interfere with sodium‑potassium balance under certain conditions and can affect flow cytometry analysis in cell labeling experiments. This medium is phenol red‑free and avoids these potential impacts.
